5 Smaller Festivals You Need to Attend in 2016

11.1.16

This post is ridiculously chatty so you might want to grab a cup of tea or some sort of drink and maybe make yourself rather comfortable before you start to read. Ok so i think by now we have gathered that I'm a bit of a festival lover. Considering that where i live holds two pretty huge festivals one in June and one in September. Something I'm hoping to do this year is go to plenty of smaller sized festivals. One thing that is a pain is getting to them as travelling to and from an island doesn't come cheap especially around the summer and the festival season ! However if you are not one for the really big festivals that are so overwhelming then these are a few that i'd recommend going to if your looking for something slightly smaller and different.

Barn On The Farm is exactly what it says on the label. Its a festival that the stages are inside a barns and is held on a farm in Gloucestershire. I've never been but I've always wanted to go just because of how great it looks ! The line up for 2015 had James Bay as one of the headliners and in recent years its had some bands and artists that have become really , really successful such as   George Ezra , Gabrielle Aplin , Ed Sheeran , Bastille and Hozier to name a few. Its definitely one of those festivals to go to if you want to find the next big thing and chill all at the same time. Also did i mention that the farm has emu's on site. Barn on the Farm takes place on the 1st-3rd July 2016 and is bound to have a brilliant line up for 2016 ! http://www.barnonthefarm.co.uk

Leefest has what i think one of the most interesting stories as to how it started. It started by Lee Denny who is the founder of Leefest deciding that when his parents went away on holiday not to plan a house party but a festival instead. This became an annual thing which only made it get bigger and bigger each year. Now in its 10th year expect something incredible to come out of it. Bands and artists that have played before include : Clean Bandit , London Grammar , Years and Years and Jack Garratt. This year it will be held in a secret location in Kent/Surrey and is taking place on the 28th-30th July 2016. http://leefest.org.uk/holding/index.htm

Common People was started last year by the same people behind Bestival. Its slightly bigger  than the other festivals i have mentioned but as its brand new its something worth trying if your interested and I'm hoping to go this year if i can as the line up looks good. The festival is based in Southampton and now in Oxford for the 1st time. This year the line up includes a wide variety of acts from Mr Motivator (you can also find him and his interesting choice of lycra at Camp Bestival and Bestival as he's there most years) , Craig David, Don Broco and Jamie Lawson. Oxford is held in South Park and Southampton is held on the Common on the 28th-29th May. http://southampton.commonpeople.net

2000 Trees is a perfect festival if your there purely for the music. Its just outside of Cheltenham based on Upcote Farm. Over the three days there are at least 80 acts ranging from rock to indie along with the amazing headliners closing each night. Young Guns ,  We Are The Ocean , Wolf Alice , Twin Atlantic and Bombay Bicycle Club are a few bands that played in the past. Its another one of those festivals that could potentially be a big festival yet its more condensed down with a capacity of 5,000. This Festival is between the 7th-9th July 2016. http://www.twothousandtreesfestival.co.uk

The Great Escape in Brighton is great for discovering new talent. With your wristband you are entitled to go into over 30 different venues that are all dotted around Brighton. Basically think of it as a golden ticket to a lot of gigs in a lot of different venues. I have heard plenty about The Great Escape and its definitely on my list of festivals to attend in the future. On the Thursday of TGA they hold a spotlight show on who they think is going to do well in the future. This year sees Oh Wonder , Shura and Mura Masa playing the spotlight show. Past bands and artists that have played the TGA that have become pretty successful include Ella Eyre , Slaves , Haim , Paolo Nutini , Ellie Goulding , Vampire Weekend and Adele. The Great Escape is held on between the 19th-21st May 2016. http://greatescapefestival.com

Barn on the Farm literally looks like the dream festival so i'd love to get around going to that one eventually. I'd love to go to a festival in Europe one day that would be amazing ! I'm all for smaller festivals and ones with a unique and interesting back story behind them. I'm so excited for the festival season to return in the summer it's by far my favourite time of the year !
